Southampton Rangers have been deducted three points from their 5-0 win over X-Roads on September 22, after being found guilty by the Bermuda Football Association of fielding an ineligible player, Kieshon Wilson, in the match at Southampton Oval. The club committed a similar offence in January of this year in the FA Cup when they were stripped of their 4-2 win over St David’s after bringing on substitute Najiyah Raynor who was not listed on the teamsheet. That offence brought the club a $150 fine with coach Jomar Wilkinson and Raynor suspended for one game. For this second offence Southampton Rangers have been fined $300, with the coach and player suspended for one match and a one-point deduction imposed on the club. A 3-0 score has been awarded to X-Roads, giving them their first win of the season, while Rangers are now bottom of the table with two losses and a one-point penalty deduction. Ireland Rangers have also been sanctioned by the BFA for not having their field prepared for Sunday’s match against Wolves at Malabar Field. They forfeited the match with Wolves who were issued a 3-0 win. The three points are no doubt a boost for X-Roads ahead of tomorrow’s home match with joint leaders PHC at Garrison Field, their second meeting in four days following PHC’s comfortable 6-1 win in the Dudley Eve Trophy on Wednesday night. X-Roads have a new coach in Larry Smith who is returning after a long absence from the game to replace Farid El Karfa who has left the island for the UK in search of a coaching opportunity to go with his A-level qualifications. “Farid used to play for X-Roads and when the time came to throw his hat into the ring and get involved in coaching, we gave him our full support,” said Saleem Talbot, the club founder and team manager, of the coach who guided the team into the Premier Division in 2017. “He always had some ambition to try to see if he can coach at the professional level and that’s what he’s trying to do overseas. We wish him the best. “He still stays in touch, we don’t see him as a loss as such. “We support him in his quest to do greater things. We are not just a football club, we want to improve our football and change the lives of our players as people.”Talbot is happy to have Smith bring his experience to the club. “Once it was clear that Farid was going to be off the island, then clearly we had to find a replacement. Larry Smith came to us by way of reference and we sat down and had a chat,” he added.Donavan Thompson, the club’s top scorer last season with 22 goals which was just one behind Angelo Simmons’s league-best 23, played with a face mask on Wednesday night after suffering a broken nose early in a Dudley Eve Trophy game against Dandy Town last month. “It was a very physical game and he broke his nose in the first eight minutes of the match,” Talbot said. “He came off to stop the bleeding and at that time we didn’t know it was broken. The bleeding stopped and he wanted to continue. “He’s fine and we’re fine. We’re here to stay, you win some games and lose some games.” After yesterday’s ruling, X-Roads find themselves in third place on four points, two points behind joint leaders PHC and Devonshire Cougars. Rangers, just promoted, drop to the bottom of the table with a minus-point penalty. Rangers hope to erase that deficit at Goose Gosling Field tomorrow against Boulevard who are still looking for their first point and first goal of the season after four league and cup losses.
