Smith named fans’ player of the month

  • Worthy winner: Jonte Smith was named the Cheltenham Town fans’ player of the month

Jonté Smith, the Cheltenham Town striker, expressed his gratitude after being chosen as the club’s Autovillage Player of the Month for October after a string of outstanding performances.

“I am extremely thankful to receive this award, it does mean a lot to me,” he said. “I will continue to work hard and do my best every day.”

The Bermuda forward enjoyed a productive month in the attacking third of the pitch, which peaked with a superb hat-trick that guided Cheltenham to a 4-3 win at home to West Ham United Under-21 in a Leasing.com Trophy tie at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.

After coming off the bench to help Michael Duff’s side draw level away at Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League Two, Smith featured at Walsall before making another impressive cameo as a substitute later in the month at home to Macclesfield Town.

His skilful run and pass set Ryan Broom through for the final goal in a 3-0 win over Macclesfield. It was an impressive individual performance that was hailed by the manager.

The 25-year-old was chosen by his club’s fans across social media for the award, beating out the likes of Ben Tozer, the Cheltenham captain, Luke Varney and Broom, who were also among the shortlist of last month’s top performers.

Smith signed for Cheltenham from Oxford United on transfer-deadline day until January.
