Paul Douglas is determined to seize any opportunity he is handed against Mexico and further cement his position within Kyle Lightbourne’s Bermuda squad.The 22-year-old was called up to the national squad for the first time last month ahead of the reverse fixture, without playing, but received encouraging praise from the coach for his promising display in an advanced midfield role, in the 0-0 draw against Guatemala in a friendly at the National Stadium.That performance was enough to earn another call up for Bermuda’s final League A game in the Concacaf Nations League in Toluca today, with a point needed to finish above Panama in the three-team group B and retain their top-flight status.Although Douglas is unlikely to be handed a place in the starting line-up, he is hopeful of still playing an important role against the Gold Cup champions, in whatever position Lightbourne needs him.“We’ve been working hard on a game plan which we believe can counter what Mexico did against us last time out,” Douglas said. “I’m definitely hoping I can play a part in the match. I think I can bring a different aspect to the team whenever that is needed. That’s always been my natural game, to get on the ball, try and make things happen and be as effective as possible.“I like to think I’m a versatile midfield player and will do a job where ever the coach needs me. I’m capable in attack or a more defensive midfield role.”Lightbourne has opted to tinker with the personnel within his central midfield three depending going from a more attacking trio in the 4-1 home defeat by Panama to a defensive set-up in the surprise 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture. “The coach has made a number of changes to the midfield for different matches and so if I’m given the chance I’ll do my best to stake a claim,” Douglas added. “I’m definitely looking to try and play an important role in the game.“It’s obviously a huge game for everyone and is the biggest ever of my life so far.”Douglas, who plays in England for non-League side Alvechurch in the BetVictor Southern League Premier Division Central, is well aware of what a good performance could do for his professional ambitions.“I’m enjoying playing non-League football, but my ultimate aim is to play professionally,” said Douglas, who spent time in the United States between the ages of 14 to 18 before relocating England.Sam Murley travelled to Toluca, Mexico, thanks to sponsorship from Living Legends @living.legends.bda
