Super sub: Justin Donawa netted for Darlington at the weekend

Justin Donawa expressed his delight after making a “positive impact” to help Darlington advance in the Buildbase FA Trophy at the weekend.

The Bermuda forward came on as a 56th-minute substitute and netted the winner in Darlington’s 2-1 home win over Gainsborough Trinity at Blackwell Meadows Stadium on Saturday.

“I’m just glad to have come on with a positive impact,” Donawa said. “Even before the finish, I was able to win a free kick and help us get into those dangerous areas in the attacking third and was able to put that one away when it really mattered.”

The goal was the fourth of the season for Donawa.

“I’m just looking to get as many goals and assists as I can,” he said.

Jack Lambert put Darlington ahead before Kingsley James grabbed an equaliser to leave the teams level at the half before Donawa’s 69th-minute winner settled a tight affair.

“We were getting in a lot of good positions and should have put away a few more chances,” he added.

Donawa had only returned to the England the day before the game, having played for Bermuda against Mexico in Toluca in the Concacaf Nations League on Tuesday,

Bermuda’s hopes of retaining their Nations League A status, and with it automatic qualification to the Gold Cup in 2021, were dashed after conceding a late goal in a 2-1 defeat. A draw would have been enough to finish second in group B above Panama.

“Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 in the 93rd minute, but it was a good experience,” Donawa said. “I got a good run out with the boys and it’s obviously a high level of football.”

Donawa’s Bermuda team-mate Osagi Bascome also featured for Darlington as a second-half substitute against Gainsboroug.

“To come back and be able to help the team is always a big plus, especially to get the result,” Bascome said.

Darlington are away to National League side Solihull Moors in the next round of the FA Trophy in a cup tie to be held over the weekend of December 13 to 15.
