Justin Donawa says he could not be happier to be living up to his own expectations at non-League side Darlington.The Bermuda forward is playing in his debut season with the Vanarama National League North club and has made a big impact with five goals already under his belt.“I believe my debut season at Darlington has gone extremely well,” Donawa said. “I wanted to come here and prove myself to be a good player and be a good asset to the team. I think I’ve done just that.“That was my goal and in terms of expectations I’m right where I want to be, contributing with goals and good play in general.“I can’t be more happy with what I’ve done so far.”The former Somerset Trojans player signed for the club at the start of the season after having trials last summer.“It’s been a relatively smooth transition from the United States to coming here in a new environment and trying to prove myself,” Donawa added.“There was a little bit of a transition period in terms of the style and the quickness of the play, but I think I’ve adjusted well.”Donawa’s early season success has made him popular among the fans, whom he credits for helping him settle in smoothly at Blackwell Meadows Stadium.“The fans have been brilliant this whole season,” he said. “Through the ups and downs they have been our backbone and the twelfth man every game,” he said.“They have really embraced me helped me settle in smoothly on and off the field.”Donawa netted his fifth goal of the season in Darlington’s 3-2 defeat at home to Telford last weekend.He scored his side’s second of the game to give them a two-goal lead at the break before the visiting side hit back with three goals.“I had an earlier chance after about five minutes to put us ahead that I definitely should have put away,” Donawa said. “I was able to make up for it around the 30-minute mark to put us 2-0 up.“We had an excellent first half. We created a lot of chances and were really giving them a lot of trouble.“The second half, we didn’t continue to do the things we were doing in the first half and it proved costly.”Darlington are at home to third-place Chester in the league tomorrow.
