Lethal Hollis at the double for Rangers

Two goals: Shayne Hollis

Southampton Rangers 2 X-Roads 1Southampton Rangers booked their spot in the semi-finals with a win against X-Roads at Southampton Oval yesterday. After going down in the first half to a sloppy own goal, Shayne Hollis helped his team pull off a spirited comeback, scoring twice from the penalty spot in the second half. Jomar Wilkinson, the Rangers coach, was pleased with the result and the effort of his players to overturn the early deficit.“At half-time we made a few tactical changes, which made us more of a threat going forward,” Wilkinson said. “Hats off to X-Roads because they made it really difficult for us, but my team showed some good character to come from behind and I am proud of the effort they put in today.”The match was tightly contested from the first whistle, with neither team giving the other anytime on the ball. The only clear-cut chances came in the opening ten minutes. Rangers had the first look at goal seven minutes in when Damon Ming played Keishon Wilson through, but goalkeeper Jez Burrows was quick off his line to cut the angle and block the shot.At the other end, Shaquille Bean was called into action, diving low to his right to save a well-struck effort from Mauriq Hill just inside the box. Aside from these two opportunities, the match would remain quiet until just before the half when a mix up at the back gifted X-Roads the lead. Defender Jahkai Hill was a bit unfortunate when his attempted clearance of a goal-bound header ricocheted off his goalkeeper and back into his net.It was much of the same for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but the game sprang into life in the 70th minute when Rangers were awarded their first penalty. Referee Antoine Augustus did not hesitate to point to the spot when an attempted pass hit the hand of a X-Roads defender just inside the box. The call was heavily protested by the visiting side, but Hollis kept his cool and eventually placed his spot kick hard and low to the goalkeeper’s left. Now both teams were looking for a winner and X-Roads thought they had found it when Donavon Thompson volleyed home a perfect diagonal free kick from Ahria Simons. The celebrations were cut short though, when they realised that the referee’s assistant had her flag up for offside. To add insult to injury, Rangers were awarded another penalty five minutes later when Jarazhino Bassett was shoved in the back when attempting to receive a cross. Hollis stepped up once again firmly striking the ball past Burrows, who could only get his finger tips on it.SCORERSSouthampton: Hollis 72 pen, 85 penX-Roads: Bean 40 ogTEAMSSouthampton Rangers: S Bean, J Hill (sub: K Astwood, 76min), M Nisbett-Tankard, R Sampson, D Frost, D Brangman, K Davis, D Ming, C Henry (sub J Bassett 62), S Hollis, K Wilson.
