Hood’s merry band take top spot

On target: Hood's Tomiko Goater

Goose Gosling Field was made to resemble Sherwood Forest last night as Robin Hood enjoyed the trappings of home in defeating previously high-riding North Village after they dared enter the lair of the “legend”.Among the heroes of Hood’s merry band were Shakir Smith and Tomiko Goater who scored either side of the interval ensuring victory which allowed for the club’s ascension to the top of the Premier Division, which they now lead via better goal difference than Village but with a match in hand, both clubs having achieved 19 points. The first half was an evenly fought affair with neither side able to express dominance and opportunity at a premium.Hood drew first blood in the 25th minute when Shakir Smith received a ball from midfield near the top of the penalty area, touched it forward and burst past his marker into space before unleashing a full-blooded drive that seared past goalkeeper Tahj Bell and ballooned into the top left corner.Rather than drop their heads Village quickly regrouped and began playing more cohesively and were rewarded when a free kick was awarded just outside the box. Striker Keishen Bean stepped up to produce a gem of a set piece, curling his right foot shot beyond a diving Jason Simons into the right side of goal.Hood went ahead again 12 minutes into the second half as Tomiko Goater produced a dazzling piece of shooting with a right foot “banana kick” from 26 yards that was always bending away from Bell leaving the goalkeeper grasping air as the ball hit the target.Hood were reduced in numbers when Dominique Williams was sent off in the 70th minute for a second bookable offence.Nevertheless they came eerily close to adding an insurance goal 80 minutes on when Smith drew the goalkeeper left leaving a large gap in goal but his cross just eluded the onrushing Goater.John Barry Nusum, the Hood coach, was both relieved and thankful for being able to assume first place.“It was a good game that went back and forth and I though the first half they dominated us in terms of possession and we came more into it in the second and gained momentum and were able to pull it out,” he said.“It was a good game where you’re just glad to come out on the winning side of it.”Meanwhile, Village assistant coach Randy Spence, standing in for head coach Kenny Thompson, who is off the island, was disappointed at the result but not by the effort of his players.“It was well fought tonight, maybe a few mental lapses here and there but they were good goals by Hood today. We could have done better in the last third offensively but that’s the game of football.“I still want to applaud the team for the hard work they put in and ability to stick with this team, there’s always disappointment with losing the top spot but we’ll get over this and move onto the next opponent.”TEAMSRobin Hood (4-4-2): J Simons — C Castle, A Russell, D Williams, L Steede — J Corday (sub: P Parsons 70min), L Evans, T Goater (sub: T Tyrell 85), C Ryan — S Smith, L Simmons.
