Devonshire Colts are looking to build on their strong start to the football season as they aim to achieve promotion.Colts are second in the table, six points behind St George’s, and continued their push for the top flight with a 4-2 win at home against Hamilton Parish last weekend.Rahzir Smith-Jones, Jahkeylo Burgess, Chemari Henry, and an own goal by Tareek Webb led the Prospect side to victory.Ray Jones, the Colts coach, has been encouraged by his team’s showing this term.“So far, we are still in the hunt for promotion,” said Jones, who is also the Bermuda assistant coach. “We picked up some silverware, the Shield, over Christmas. We have made a positive start.”As for the prospects of another trophy this season, Jones is optimistic.“As long as we are in it, we are in it to win it,” he said. “I cannot predict which one, the league or FA Cup, but as long as we’re still eligible in each competition, we will try to win it. That’s always been our motto.”Young forward Senoj Mitchell is the top scorer in the First Division with eight goals. Colts have won three of their last five league games, and have scored the joint-most goals in the First Division with 29.“It’s a young team and in terms of ability, I have no problem,” Jones added. “They are learning how to deal with difficult moments. We are showing good mental strength when we face bumps in the road. The future looks bright.”Jones believes Colts have to remain disciplined defensively if they want to win the league. They have kept just two clean sheets from ten games in all competitions this campaign.“We have conceded too many goals for my liking,” Jones said. “Even though we have been in matches, if we can get some more clean sheets, we will stand a chance. That’s something I have emphasised to the players.”Jones believes the team has improved collectively since the season started.“Collectively, as a group, the team is improving and learning from its mistakes,” he added. “I’d say the team has performed very well as a whole.”Colts resume their quest for promotion when they host Flanagan’s Onions on Sunday. Onions were awarded the points and a 3-0 from their match with St David’s on Sunday that was postponed because the St David’s pitch was not prepared before the match.The three points keeps Onions in the promotion race, a point behind Vasco da Gama and three behind Colts but with a game in hand on the top three teams. That match, against Wolves, has been rescheduled for January 22.
