Hood left to rue profligacy

Hood scorer Lejaun Simmons

Robin Hood 1 Devonshire Cougars 1Robin Hood’s Premier Division title aspirations took a dent as Devonshire Cougars snatched a late share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Goose Gosling Field last night.Aiming to replace North Village at the top of the standings, Hood came into the match two points adrift of their title rivals with a game in hand. The home side were set to leapfrog Village after captain Lejaun Simmons’s first-half strike looked seemingly enough to secure all three points. However, just as they did at home against Somerset Eagles in December, Hood missed a host of chances to kill off the tie and were duly punished as substitute Elisha Darrell struck with just six minutes remaining. “We’re creating a lot of chances, not putting them away and giving the other team a chance to get back into the game,” said Hood coach John Barry Nusum, who was again left to rue his side’s profligacy.“They had one real chance and scored it. We have to do better with taking our chances, there’s not much to it than that.“Games in hand don’t mean anything when you’re not picking up all three points. Now we’re level with North Village and we’ll have to make sure we do better.“These are the games that feel like losses. When you dominate and create a host of chances to kill of the game and come away with a point, it’s hard to take.”In an opening 45 minutes devoid of clear cut chances, the one piece of quality resulted in the opening goal.Incisive link up play between Aaron Nelson and Chae Brangman led to the latter laying the ball off for Simmons on the edge of the area, who unleashed an unstoppable right-footed strike past goalkeeper Ajai Daniels. The breakthrough appeared to ignite Hood who started the second half with more urgency and cohesion going forward.Further chances came and went as Simmons spurned an golden opportunity to double his and Hood’s tally, while Casey Castle saw a stinging left-foot strike from just inside the area cannon back off the crossbar with Daniels beaten. With time winding down, Hood were ultimately punished as Cougars levelled with their only real chance of the game.A low drilled cross from the left-hand side somehow evaded everyone inside the area, except Darrell who slid in to bundle the ball past the desperate dive of Jason Simons.“We worked hard, withstood a lot of pressure at times and in the end got our just rewards,” said Cougars coach Vance Brown.“Playing away at Hood we knew they’d bring the game to us and so we knew we’d have to work hard. We knew they’d be long periods where we wouldn’t have the ball for and so it was about keeping our defensive shape.“We were trying to give Elijah a break ahead of the weekend but I had to call on him and he won us a point.”
