A die-hard and spirited Somerset Trojans outfit were left deflated after conceding a penalty deep into second-half stoppage time to allow Robin Hood to a share of the spoils at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.

Hood substitute Tevahn Tyrell came off the bench to score two goals, his second with the last kick of the game, to salvage a point for the title contenders.

The point for the Trojans keeps them three points clear of the drop zone with four league games remaining.

“It is tough when you give away a goal so late in the game,” said Trojans coach Dennis Brown. “We have to learn how to close out the game but one point is better than nothing at this time.”

Trojans took a surprised, early lead when Hood goalkeeper, Jason Simons allowed Dion Stovell’s tame shot to roll into the bottom left corner.

Hood hit back as Antwan Russell picked out Tomiko Goater who beat his man before firing past Dequan Crockwell.

Trojans retook the lead after the break when a shot hit Colin Ryan’s hand leaving referee Francis to point to the spot.

Burgess planted his spot kick low and to the right of the diving goalkeeper.

Hood brought on Tyrell and he had an immediate impact, poking in from a Russell cross.

Trojans were handed another penalty after Jaylon Bather was adjudged to have fouled Keith Jennings. Simons saved Jennings spot kick but could do nothing as the the taker slotted home the rebound.

Just as the Trojans were set to celebrate the vital win, tragedy struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time when a desperate clearance hit the hand of a defender resulting in a penalty. Tyrell kept his composure to rescue a dramatic point.

“We have had a never-say-die attitude all season,” Hood’s Russell said.

“We play hard and battle but try to do too much at times and it comes back to bite us. Hopefully, this point will go a long way for us.”
