The Bermuda Football Association held the Legends Scholarship Awards presentation at the Clyde Best Centre of Excellence on Thursday with five young players recognised in honour of the newest BFA Legends — Arnold West, Chevonne Furbert, the late Lance Brown, Ellsworth Lambert and Danvers Seymour Sr. West, the longtime Devonshire Cougars goalkeeper, most notably played for Bermuda in Olympic qualifiers, Pan Am Games, and won a bronze medal at the 1978 CAC Games in Medellín, Colombia. His scholarship went to Julian Roser, who plays for Dandy Town and will be attending the Bermuda College with the expectation of graduating in 2022. Furbert was a goalscorer extraordinaire and one of the best women footballers ever produced in Bermuda. Her scholarship went to Ka’Ri Richards, a member of the Bermuda Referees Association. Richards will be studying business administration at St Francis Xavier University, in Nova Scotia, Canada. Brown, who suffered a fatal heart attack in 1994 at the young age of 36, is best remembered as a key member of many title-winning Somerset Trojans teams. He also was known for a period as the “$2,500 Man” after his sensational transfer from the Trojans to Somerset Eagles. The Lance Brown Scholarship goes fittingly to a fellow Trojan, Zaire Smith, who will be attending Hoosac High School in New York on a college prep course. Devonshire Colts stalwart Ellsworth Lambert was part of the team to first lift the Martonmere Cup. He was also in Bermuda’s bronze medal-winning squad at the CAC Games in Colombia. The recipient of his scholarship was Christen Lugo-Elibox, who plays for St David’s and will be attending the Calverton School in Maryland on an International Baccalaureate course. Seymour dominated PHC’s midfield engine room for decades and was destined to be a coach when he hung up his boots. He, too, was in the Bermuda that took bronze at the 1978 CAC Games. The Seymour scholarship went to PHC player Jai Bean, who is still considering offers for university placement.
