Burgess proves to be a class above

Ryan Burgess produced the standout drive in the latest Bermuda Karting Club race day in St David’s.

The young driver tore up the Southside Rubis Raceway track to claim all three heats in the TAG Junior class. The girls, however, were hot on his heels as Ashley Horseman once again displayed her potential — and no little pace — to register two runners-up finishes. Jorja Thomas claimed second in the third heat and a third in the first.

Elsewhere, the packed grid in the TAG senior division produced a familiar winner in heat one, with club president Scott “Skitchy” Barnes claiming the chequered flag.

However, youth won out as Blake Horseman built on a second-place finish to win both heat two and three in an impressive display.

The latter was particularly thrilling for the spectators, with Horseman involved in a see-saw battle with Barnes, who was left helpless when his pipe came off because of a broken spring and slipped down to seventh.

It is worth noting that, while the competition is fierce at the front of the race in this class, the jostling for places is equally intense further down the track. Bilal Binns, Brian Monk and Richard Walker each refused to back down in the fight for vital points. The class has strength in depth.

In the LO206 Masters, Jeff Sousa picked up two wins, with Bobby DeCosta mopping up heat three. Travis Lewis claimed a hat-trick of thirds and he led the chasing pack.

The new LO206 Seniors class has quickly grown to four drivers, with Simos Charalambas and Barnes now joined by Ahkil Kapur and Kenneth “Speedy” Harrison out on track. Barnes clinched two wins while Harrison lived up to his nickname to win heat three.

Nile Bean was ruthless in the Cadet Class, romping away to three wins over rivals Jacob Hines and Nathan DeCosta, while the three Shifter races were all won by the experienced Barnes.

Barnes said the race day was another success for the club.

“It went well,” he said. “The LO206 senior class continues to grow and is now up to four drivers. We are still trying to push new drivers into the 206 classes as they are the best and cheapest way to get into karting for ‘newbies’.

“Ryan Burgess did well to win all three in the TAG Junior but the other kids are starting to get faster and faster and are catching up fast. Plus, Ryan is a year ahead of the others, who are stepping up this season.

“The Cadet class continues to feature the best battles on the track with all three kids — Nile, Jacob and Nathan — racing hard and strong.”

The next race day is Sunday, November 25 and is a trophy/points day sponsored by Peugeot Bermuda.
