Sports body to discuss social climate at meeting

Important discussions: David Sabir, the ANSGB president

The island’s social climate and its impact on local sports will be among the items on the agenda at the Association of National Sport Governing Bodies general assembly meeting being held in collaboration with the Department of Youth, Sport and Social Development at CedarBridge Academy on Saturday.

“The theme of this meeting is ‘Sports — Impacting Lives’ and I think the theme of this general assembly meeting is very topical in regards to the social climate in the country and some of the important aspects of what sports offers to any country,” David Sabir, the ANSGB president, said.

“It is important that as sports administrators, coaches, sports officials in general, parents and supporting personnel that everybody understands their role on behalf of their sport and the impact that their role has on all stakeholders — whether they be competing athletes, fans, sponsors, media — the impact of what we do in the lives of all those that enjoy and participate in sport one way or another.”

The purpose of the meeting, to be held in the Discovery Hall at CedarBridge, is to continue providing a platform for a unified voice for issues that relate to NSGBs collectively, collaboration on a broader level between sports organisations and draw upon the collective body of experience of all NSGBs while benefiting from information via other stakeholders and community partners.

“All national sports national governing bodies are encouraged and requested to have representation at the meeting,” Sabir added.

“To assist with preparing for the meeting we would be extremely grateful if all NSGBs complete the registration form indicating the name(s) and function as well as contact details of the person(s) of their NSGB represents to the meeting and e-mail it to ANSGBBDA@gmail.com.”

The general assembly meeting will start at 9am with light refreshments before the call to order at 10am.

Formed nearly a year ago, the ANSGB’s stated aim includes advocating on behalf of NSGBs on matters relating to government, sponsorship and community, providing advice and strategic direction centred on the National Sports Policy as well as developing best practice guidelines for NSGB’s and assist in implementing them.
