Triple success for Saltus

Making a racket: Kelly Simmons, Emily Hartwig and Laura Hope, of Saltus Grammar School

Saltus Grammar School won three of the four divisions at the Bermuda School Sports Federation senior school girls badminton tournament, held at Warwick Academy.

Emily Hartwig got things started for Saltus with a straight-sets win over Warwick’s top seed, G-zai Dyer. Hartwig avenged her pool stage loss to Dyer with an 11-8, 11-7 victory.

Hartwig defeated Kayla Raymond from Mount Saint Agnes 14-12 in the semi-final while Dyer overcame Saltus top seed Sanna Volger 11-7 to advance to the final.

In the quarter-finals, Hartwig defeated Warwick’s Grace Arrowsmith 11-8, while Dyer knocked off team-mate Amber Simmons 11-8. The other quarter-finals saw Raymond defeat Saltus’s Kara Dallas 11-7 and Volger getting past Ahziah Hunt 13-11.

Dyer and Simmons teamed up to capture gold in the under 16 doubles competition in an all-Warwick final. Dyer and Simmons edged past Hunt and Arrowsmith 11-8, 12-10.

Dyer and Simmons defeated the Saltus pair of Dallas and Morgan Rossiter 11-5 in the semi-finals, while Hunt and Arrowsmith joined forces to defeat the Saltus pair of Volger and Hartwig.

Saltus senior Kelly Simmons dug deep to win the over-16 division in a three-set battle over Kayley Longworth, from Mount Saint Agnes. Simmons took a 5-1 lead in the first set, before Longworth scored ten straight points to take the first set 11-5. Simmons refocused to win the second set 11-9, before winning the deciding set 11-5.

Simmons defeated team-mate Laura Hope 11-9 in her semi-final while Longworth again scored ten straight to win her semi-final 11-5 over MSA’s Kayla Henderson.

In the quarter-finals Simmons got by Warwick’s Riley Jackson 11-5, while Hope got by team-mate Alice Kooiman 11-9. Longworth defeated Warwick’s Zurri Seymour 11-2 with Henderson getting by Warwick’s top seed 11-7.

Simmons and Hope rallied from a first-set loss to win the doubles tournament in three sets over the MSA pair of Longworth and Henderson. The MSA duo won the first set 11-2, but Saltus stormed back to win the next two sets 12-10, 11-9.

Saltus defeated their second-seed team of Kooiman and Kathlene Brown 11-7 in the semi-final while the MSA duo defeated Warwick Academy 11-6.
