Bermuda stars make impact

Check it out: Yushae DeSilva-Andrade shows off her bronze medal at the airport after placing in the top three in her division at the ISFed Regional Open championship in Montreal last weekend. Behind her is teammate Omar Hayward who reached the semi-final in his division.

Bermuda’s boccia players have moved up the latest world rankings released by the Boccia International Sport Federation.

Omar Hayward is now ranked 20th out of 109 athletes in the BC1 class, Yushae DeSilva-Andrade is 28th out of 133 athletes in the BC2 class and Steve Wilson is 33rd out of 118 athletes in the BC4 class. Jamal Bean is ranked 104th in the BC4 class.

“To see our players climbing the rankings is a credit to the players hard work and commitment as well as to the numerous volunteers who help train the athletes every week.” a Boccia Bermuda spokesperson said.

Hayward, Wilson and Desilva-Andrade will represent Bermuda at the Boccia World Championships in Liverpool, England, from August 12 to 18.

The competition is set to attract 190 athletes from 33 countries and athletes will battle it out for world titles, as well as important ranking points ahead of the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2020.
