Bermuda added another medal to their NatWest Island Games tally in Gibraltar, winning silver in bowling yesterday.

Following on from Damien Matthews and David Maycock clinching bronze in the men’s doubles a day previously, Maycock was once again on the podium, this time with mixed doubles partner Gloria Dill with the pair finishing second with 2,044 pins.

Meanwhile, Matthews and partner Earlene Tucker finished in fifth with 1,999 pins, Lamar Richardson, who won Bermuda’s first medal with a singles silver, joined Florenece Simons to finish eighth with 1,894 pins and Blake Raynor and Jennifer Stovell finished in twelfth with a total of 1,747 pins.

Bermuda’s hunt for further medals was enhanced in the tennis with both Gavin Manders and Sam Butler progressing to the men’s singles quarter-finals.

Having beaten Guernsey’s Pieter Robinson and Christopher Freeman respectively in straight sets 2-0 at the round of 32, the pair prevailed in the round of 16 with Manders overcoming Simon Myers, of Ynys Mon, 2-0, and Butler beating Jack Hodges, of Jersey, in straight sets 2-0.

James Finnigan enjoyed a straight sets 2-0 success over David Perry, of Ynys Mon, in the round of 32, but could not progress beyond the round of 16 after a hard-fought 2-1 defeat against Guernsey’s No 1 Thomas Turner. David Thomas suffered elimination at the round of 32 having suffered a straight sets 2-0 loss against Jersey’s No 1 Stuart Parker.

“Today was a bit of a mixed bag,” Thomas said. “I ran into the No 1 seed but the rest of the boys fared a bit better. Everyone is in really good spirits; there’s still a lot of tennis to be played.”

Bermuda’s sailors also enjoyed a promising day of competition with the team of Kalin Hillier, Scott Mello, Adrianna Penruddocke and Jordan Etemadi sitting third in the team event after the first day of competition. In the individual disciplines, Penruddocke sits fifth in the Laser Radial Rig with 21 points, while Etemandi finds himself 11th on 43 points after two days of competition. Hillier is in sixth on 24 ponts, with Mello in ninth on 42 points, in the Laser Standard Rig.

In athletics, Brianna Mendes had to settle for fifth place in the women’s 1,500 metres final in a time of 4min 59.55sec.

In badminton, in the women’s singles round of 64, Hiral Parekh suffered a 2-0 defeat against Tina Rafaelsen, of Greenland, while Jin Sun drew 0-0 with Carys Batiste, of Guernsey. In the round of 32, Emma Lee suffered disappointed, going down 2-0 to Orkney’s Rebecca Reid.

In the men’s singles, Andy Lau suffered a 2-0 defeat to Jersey’s Mark Constable, Aaron Simons fared slightly better, but still went down to defeat, losing 2-1 to Luca Russell, of the Shetland Islands, and Denzel Simons lost 2-0 against Toke Ketwa-Driefer, of Greenland.

In the men’s doubles round of 32, Lau and Denzel Simons enjoyed a 2-1 victory against Jersey’s Spencer Hall and Columba Morling, while Mark Haugen and Danial Hughes went down to 2-0 to Duane March and Ross Steward, of the Cayman Islands.

In the women’s doubles, Lee and Zichen Wang suffered a 2-0 setback to Milka Bronlund and Pilunnguaq Hegelund, while Parekh and Sun secured a 0-0 draw against Lynsey Mackenzie and Beth Macphail, of Western Isles.

It proved a frustrating day for Bermuda’s beach volleyball athletes with defeats across the board. In the men’s group stage, Daniel Fiddick and Josh Malpas suffered three 2-0 losses to Helar Jalg and Sim Polluaar, of Saaremaa, before going down to Edvard and Jacob Nordlund, and then Gotland’s Ronny Jacobson and Svante Ortbrandt

There were also back-to-back straight set defeats for Keiron and Kyle Hamilton, who lost 2-0 to David Hidalgo and Joa Pons, of Menorca, as well as losing to Finn Alden-Joyce and Hannes Brinkborg, of Gotland.

In the women’s group stage, Allison Lacoursiere and Allison Settle suffered a 2-0 defeat to Gerli Gull and Piret Pragel, of Saaremaa, while Meghan Calhoun and Elisabeth Rae went down 2-0 against Carla Diana Calin and Emma Labrador, of Gibraltar.

There was mixed fortunes in the squash where in the men’s singles final play-off stage, Anthony Fellowes lost 3-2 to Shetland’s Stuart Copland but Stephen Smith overcame Copland’s compatriot Phil Mason 3-1. There was also joy for Greg Fitzgerald, who beat Ian France, of the Cayman Islands.

In the women’s singles, final play-offs, Rachel Barnes lost 3-1 to Eilidh Bridgeman, of Cayman Islands, while Judith Furtado, who beat Gibraltar’s Jessica Gomez 3-1 in the fourth round earlier in the day, built on that momentum with a 3-0 success over Orkney’s Jane Hill. Meagan Jackson suffered a 3-1 defeat to Jersey’s Amelie Turpin.

There was greater success in the doubles disciplines with Bermuda progressing through to three separate semi-finals. In the men’s doubles, Fitzgerald and Smith overcame Shetland’s Stuart Copland and Phil Mason, while in the women’s doubles, Furtado and Jackson beat Barbara Balcombe and Jane Hill, of Orkney. In the mixed doubles, Barnes and Fellowes overcame Balcombe and Finlay Scott, of Orkney.
