Madelyn Moore says this year’s Carifta Swimming Championships in Kingston, Jamaica will be an emotional one for her.

The promising swimmer is making her curtain call at the regional championships where she has won multiple medals competing for Bermuda over the past seven years.

“I have been competing in the Carifta Games since I was 11 so it will definitely be sad to say bye to a lot of the people I’ve been racing for seven years,” Moore said. “But hopefully I can encourage younger athletes on the Bermuda team one last time and make it a great experience for everyone.”

Moore, who is in her final year at Plymouth College in England, hopes to end her Carifta career with a bang.

“This year I am doing nine events, including relays, so I’m definitely expecting to make finals in all my events and hoping to medal in my main ones,” she said. “Definitely just looking to make my last Carifta memorable and enjoy racing.”

Even though Moore is among the strong medal contenders, she admits she has her work cut out among a formidable field.

“The competition this year is strong, which is going to make finals exciting,” she said. “The facilities have recently been refurbished so it will definitely make for some fast swimming.”

Moore was part of Bermuda’s squad that piled up 39 medals — a record for the island — at the previous Games in Nassau, Bahamas, last year.

Bermuda’s 15-strong squad completed their final warm up at the National Aquatic Centre yesterday ahead of today’s opening day of the annual regional swim meet.

“All 15 team members are now here and in good spirits,” Ben Smith, the national coach, said.

Elan Daley, Sam Williamson, Logan Watson-Brown, Brian Desmond, Jack Harvey, Kai Legband, Elijah Daley, Jaedyn Judd, Josephine Duerden, Giada Dudley-Pun, Taylor White, Gabriela Pitman, Skyler Powell and Ethan Daley are the remaining members of Bermuda’s contingent. The Carifta Swimming Championships will be held from today until Tuesday.
