Elan Daley led Bermuda’s medal assault at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Kingston, Jamaica at the weekend.

The island’s swimmers have racked up 13 medals after two days of competition, with Daley earning five golds and setting four new Carifta records at the National Aquatic Centre.

The 13-year-old was victorious in the 400 individual medley, 50 and 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and 50 backstroke while her winning times in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly were all new Carifta records.

“My performances were pretty good,” Daley told The Royal Gazette. “Some of my events could have been better, but I’m pretty happy with most of them.”

Ben Smith, the national swimming coach, added: “Elan in her first two swims yesterday [Saturday] got gold medals with Carifta records then tonight [yesterday] she got three gold medals and another two Carifta records.

“We’ve got 13 medals so far and we still have two days left.

“We had a relay medal last night [Saturday] and another so everybody is getting in on the act so there’s lots to go around.”

Logan Watson-Brown (silver and a bronze), Brian Desmond (silver), Madelyn Moore (silver), Elijah Daley (bronze) and Josephine Duerden (bronze) are the island’s remaining individual medal winners to date.

Bermuda won bronze medals in the girls 11-12 medley relay and girls 15-17 4x100 freestyle relay while Giada Dudley-Pun and Duerden both went under Bermuda record time en route to reaching the 200 breaststroke final.

Bermuda are being represented in Jamaica by a 15-strong squad who will be looking to add to their medal haul during today’s penultimate day of the annual regional championships.

Bermuda have become a major force at this event in recent years, piling up 39 medals — a record for the island — at the previous Games in Nassau, Bahamas, last year.
