Elan Daley added to her impressive medal haul at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, when she won gold in the 11-12 400 metres freestyle on the final evening of competition last night.

Daley added an eleventh medal to her haul at the meet soon after when she won the 200 metres backstroke and set a new Carifta record in the process when she touched the wall in 2 minutes 29.11 seconds.

Earlier, Daley broke the 50 metres freestyle record in the morning preliminaries with a time of 26.68sec and then lowered it further in recording yet another gold last night.

Also adding to the medal haul for Bermuda was Brian Desmond, who claimed silver in the 400 metres freestyle, breaking Jesse Washington’s record with 4:17.80. Madelyn Moore took bronze in the 50 metres freestyle event, her final individual event at Carifta.

Giada Dudley-Pun claimed the bronze in the 11-12 girls 100 metres breaststroke, while Elijah Daley won the silver in the 200 metres backstroke and Logan Watson-Brown the silver in the 200 metres backstroke in 2:32.47. Jack Harvey then added a silver in the 200 metres backstroke in 2:19.70.

The number of medals then rose to 31 when the 15-17 girls relay team of Moore, Skyler Powell, Gabriela Pitman and Watson-Brown claimed the bronze.

“That is an impressive haul for us,” coach Ben Smith said of the medals. “We are very proud of this team and this accomplishment.

“I would like to thank Richard Godwin for his hard work on deck during the meet along with Allison Watson-Brown and Rebecca White who kept the swimmers fed, rested and at the events on time. It takes a team to get these results.

“Our BASA president Doug Patterson and his leadership continues to put us in position for success. I hope that we can get more support so that we can grow the sport and to attract more local talent to the pool.”

Smith, who also serves as the Shadow Minister of Sport, added: “Thank you to the Department of Youth and Sport for the support that helped to get us to Jamaica. I know the swimmers are looking forward to a quick break before we start to build towards the summer.”

Last year at the Carifta Championships in Bahamas, Bermuda collected ten medals on the final night of competition to take their medal haul in 2017 to 39, a Carifta record for the island.
