Records tumble: Arabella Newport-Derbyshire was in superb form in the final meet of the season at the Aquatics Centre

Arabella Newport-Derbyshire broke national age group records in all four of her events at the final swim meet of the season at the Aquatics Centre last weekend.

Newport-Derbyshire started the meet, hosted by Docksiders, by breaking her own record of 43.67sec in the 50 metres backstroke in a time of 42.72.

The eight-year-old, of Harbour Swim Club, then shattered her own record of 1:34.99 in the 100 backstroke in 1:32.32 and then went on to break the 50 freestyle record of 38.95, previously held by Marleigh Howes in 38.02.

She concluded the meet by smashing the 200 individual medley record of 3:32.32, previously held by Emma Harvey in a time of 3:27.97.

Newport-Derbyshire’s times brought her an invitation to the new Harbour Gold Squad, which starts in September.

Her team-mate, Caitlin Coleman, who set a personal best in the 100 freestyle, eclipsed her previous time by more than two seconds and also received an invitation to the Gold Squad. Harbour swimmers set 136 personal bests during the meet.

Pippa Charleson swam to a personal best in the girls’ 11 to 12 50 butterfly in 31.66.

In the boys’ 13 and over 100 freestyle, Brett Smith set to a personal best in 55.75 and in the final event of the night, the boys’ 13 and over 50 freestyle, Brett Smith touched out Evan Farrow to win in 25.52.

Shona Palmer, the Harbour head coach, said: “The swimmers have worked really hard throughout the season. Their efforts and dedication were evident in the results achieved at the last meet of the season.

“I’m so proud of all of the personal accomplishments made by each swimmer this season and look forward to what the 2018-2019 season brings to the club.”

Steve Castree, the Harbour president, said: “This finish to the season is the result of an incredible five-year development plan for Harbour.

“The batch of young swimmers coming through is a direct result of the increase in focus on development, which has been in place for several years.

“The investment of time is rendering amazing results and the creation of the Gold Squad, as well as an additional senior squad, results in Harbour offering the deepest swim programme on the Island as additional coaching staff join the team.”
