Saltus make a splash in primary school event

Saltus Grammar School claimed overall bragging rights during the Primary School Swimming Championships held at the Aquatic Centre, National Sports Centre, yesterday.

Saltus finished the meet with 314 points with Warwick Academy second with 298 and Somersfield Academy third on 184.

Bermuda High School won a close girls division with 152 points, with Saltus finishing second on 146 and Warwick Academy third on 143.

Saltus claimed the boys title for the first time in four years with 168 points, followed by Warwick Academy in second with 155 and Somersfield Academy third with 103

Saltus won the under-nine girls division with 59 points, with Ajana Patton leading the charge by winning the backstroke and freestyle events. Saltus also won both the medley and freestyle relays.

Arabella Derbyshire won the butterfly, backstroke and freestyle races to lead Bermuda High School to a convincing win in the under-ten girls division. BHS won the division by a 29-point margin with 69 points and also claimed wins in both relay races.

Derbyshire’s team-mate, Olivia Gazzard, won the breaststroke to complete the sweep for BHS in the division.

Under-nine students were restricted to one length of the 25-metre pool.

Warwick Academy won the over-ten girls division with 70 points.

Marleigh Howes led the way for the Warwick school by winning the butterfly and freestyle as well as the 100-metre individual medley.

Saltus won the under-nine boys title with 57 points with Charlie Hopkin triumphant in the backstroke and breaststroke, and team-mate Charlie Sazkmary claiming gold in the freestyle and butterfly.

Warwick Academy comfortably won the under-ten boys division on 62 points, with Luke Horan leading the charge with a hat-trick of wins in the breaststroke, freestyle and individual medley races.

The middle school and senior school championships will be held on Monday at the same venue.
