The Harbour Swim Club’s youngsters impressed after only six weeks of training in the pool during the National Sports Centre’s Aquatics Facility on Friday and Saturday. The club’s swimmers achieved personal best times in more than 75 per cent of their races. Jack Harvey, 17, set some strong baseline times for the newly established Harbour Club record books. Although not a sanctioned meet, Harvey delivered a fine display, with his time of 56.66sec in the 100 metres backstroke surpassing the Bermuda Open Age record of 58.55 set by Ronald Cowen in 2002. In the 200 backstroke, Harvey set a time of 2:01.95, shattering another Bermuda Open Age record of 2:04.59 set by Jason Mastalir in 2009. Meanwhile, four members of the Harbour squad achieved Senior Gold Squad qualifying times.Nathan Burrill, Agathe Candillon, Dana Hawitt and Ava Pedro all achieved times in multiple swims.“The swimmers all did extremely well, considering they have only been back in the pool for six weeks,” said Shona Palmer, the Harbour Swim Club head coach. “I’m especially proud of their performances as although their season ended early due to Covid 19, they have returned to the pool with fantastic focus and hard work, which led to several personal bests.”Steve Castree, the Harbour president, added: “With so many swimmers in each age group it is fantastic to see such a high quality and competitive meet after a spate of ocean-based training. “The swimmers and club look forward to a new season in September and taking on more overseas challenges in the 2020-21 season as the swimmers strive to continue their rapid and impressive improvement.”
