Daniel Phillips will resume his quest for a maiden title when the Rafa Nadal Tour makes a stopover in Zaragoza, Spain.

He is competing in the under-14 boys’ age group on the indoor clay surface at the Real Zaragoza Tennis Club. The tournament takes place from May 5 to 13 and features boys and girls aged 12 to 14.

Phillips came up just shy of capturing a maiden title after finishing runner-up in his age group at the Ten Pro Global Junior Tour at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor last month.

He recorded straight-sets victories against England’s Toby Clarke (6-1, 6-0) and Switzerland’s Matteo Lavizzari (6-0, 6-4) in the first and second rounds. But he encountered more resistance in wins over France’s Antoine Bourg (4-6, 6-0, 6-0) in the third round and Germany’s Niklas Hoffman (5-7, 6-1, 7-6) in the quarters.

Phillips also lost the opening set of his semi-final match against Luca Lemaitre but was declared the winner after the Mexican retired. In the final he faced another Mexican in Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, the No 1 seed, and went down in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.

Despite losing in the final, Phillips, 13, took great satisfaction in his overall performance.

“There were some really good players and I’m pleased with how I am playing,” he said.

Phillips is continuing to make steady strides in his second year at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca. As reward for demonstrating the academy’s core values, Phillips was among a group of academy students to accompany world No 1 Rafa Nadal to last month’s Barcelona Open, where the Spaniard captured a record eleventh title after breezing to a comfortable straight-sets triumph over Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
