Noah Browne showed his victory over Micah Franklin to win this year’s Bermuda national squash title was no fluke, when he beat his friend again in the Central American and Caribbean Games round of 16 in Barranquilla, Colombia last night.

Brown won a five-game thriller 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7 to earn his place in the quarter-finals today, when he takes on Chris Binnie, of Jamaica. Binnie lost to Franklin in an exhibition in Bermuda last month, Franklin winning the last six points in a 12-10, 9-11, 12-10 win.

Earlier yesterday, Browne cantered to a preliminary round-of-32 victory over Adrian Prado, of Panama, 11-2, 11-5, 11-4.

Binnie beat Shawn Simpson, of Barbados, 11-8, 11-3, 11-7 in his round-of-16 clash.

In swimming, Maddy Moore finished second in the B final of the women’s 50m backstroke, while Jesse Washington came fifth in the men’s 100 free B final last night.

Moore finished in 30.09sec, 0.19sec behind Mayerly Escalante Hernandez, the winner, from Venezuela.

Washington clocked a time of 51.44, with first-placed Jack Kirby, of Barbados, registering 51.00.

Both Bermudians failed to make the A finals, with Moore finishing fourth in her heat in 30.39, behind winner Maria Gonzalez Ramirez, of Mexico, who clocked 28.88.

Washington was fifth in his heat in 51.60, with the winner, Renzo Tjon A Joe, of Surinam, finishing in 50.00.

In sailing, Benn Smith stands in seventh place after the first three races of the men’s Laser class with 22 points after finishing seventh, eighth and seventh. Ignacio Maegli, of Guatemala, is in a commanding lead after winning all three races yesterday. Races four, five and six take place tomorrow, with seven, eight and nine on Wednesday.
