Lewis sets season best in Ottawa

Strong showing: Lewis set a season-best time in the 100 metres at the Canadian Track and Field Championships

Jessica Lewis was in dominant form at the Canadian Track and Field Championships at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa.

Lewis, the Bermudian wheelchair sprinter, captured gold medals in the para 100 and 200 metres as she warms up for the World Para Athletics Championships in London from July 14 to 23.

The 24-year-old, who won the 800 at the Invitational Permit Meet in Bermuda last weekend, also claimed silver in the 800 and bronze in the 400.

Lewis posted a season-best time of 17.24sec in the 100, 31.60 in the 200, 1:03.85 in the 400, and 2:08.66 in the 800.

“The meet went really well and the times were good,” said Lewis, who is based in Mississauga. “It was a great way to end the season before heading to the World Championships.

“I’m feeling very strong right now and it was great to get a season-best in the 100.”

Ilana Dupont, of Canada, who finished third at the Permit Meet at the National Stadium, came second in the 100 and third in the 200 in Ottawa.

Lewis has enjoyed plenty of success in the past few years, winning gold in the 100 at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto in 2015 to become the first Bermudian to medal at a major para-sports competition.

She reached a new high at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar, that same year, claiming bronze in the 100.

Lewis became a two-times Paralympian when she competed in Rio de Janeiro last summer, placing sixth in the 100 final.
