Jessica Lewis just missed out on a medal in her first event at the World Para Athletics Championships in London on Saturday.

The Bermudian para-athlete finished fourth in a blistering race, but set a personal best with a time of 30.47sec in the T53 200 metres at the London Stadium in the British capital.

Gold medal-winner Samantha Kinghorn, of Britain, set a world record with a time of 28.61. Angela Ballard, of Australia, claimed silver in 29.09 with Turk Hamide Kurt winning bronze in 30.02.

Lewis is next in action tomorrow in the 400 heats, with the final on Wednesday afternoon, Bermuda time, before finishing the meet next Sunday in the 100 and 800.

Lewis has cemented herself as one of the top wheelchair sprinters after a string of eye-catching performances at major competitions.

She won gold in the 100 at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto in 2015 to become the first Bermudian to medal at a major para-sports competition.

Lewis then reached a new high at the championships in Doha that same year, claiming bronze in the 100.

The Bermudian became a two-times Paralympian when she competed in Rio de Janeiro last summer, placing sixth in the 100 final.

She warmed up for the World Para Athletics Championships by winning several medals at the Canadian Track and Field Championships at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, Ontario, this month.

Lewis captured golds in the 100 and 200 before claiming silver in the 800 and bronze in the 400.

Tyrone Smith, the Bermuda long jumper, will compete at the World Championships in Athletics at the London Stadium next month. The competition runs from August 5 to 13.
