Lewis produces podium finish
Zekiah Lewis placed third in the girls’ long jump with a leap of 17ft 1in at the Yale Track Classic in New Haven, Connecticut, last weekend.
Lewis, 19, was one of four Bermudians on St Johnsbury Academy’s indoor athletics team. Last week she broke the Vermont school’s record in the long jump with a leap of 17ft 4in.
“Zekiah has been a great addition to the team,” coach Chip Langmaid said. “She is a fantastic jumper and is adding sprints to her list of events.”
Lewis and her team-mates nearly broke the state record in the 4x200 metres relay event with their time of 1:48.86.
Lewis, who competed in the Carifta Games in Curaçao last year, was part of the Bermuda under-17 football team at the Concacaf Caribbean qualifiers in Haiti in October.
Matteo Dill, 18, placed eleventh in the long jump to move up to second in the Vermont rankings.
Malik Joell, 19, was 28th in the 800, while the 4x400 relay team of Dill, Joell, Nate Atkins and another Bermudian, Sajan Harvey, 19, improved Vermont’s leading time when they placed sixth in the Yale meet, clocking 3:41.03.
St Johnsbury has a long connection with top Bermudian athletes, most notably Dage Minors, the KPMG Front Street Elite Mile winner.
Quinnae Outerbridge, a middle-distance runner, graduated last year and is now at the University of Hartford on a partial scholarship.
