Smith finishes fourth in Toronto

Tyrone Smith missed out on the podium in Toronto

Tyrone Smith finished fourth in the men’s long jump final at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships, at the Varsity Stadium, Toronto, today.

Smith, who won silver at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia, two weeks ago, posted a best leap of 7.98 metres in his final attempt.

Marquis Dendy, of the United States, won the event in 8.29, with Tajay Gayle, of Jamaica, second in 8.24, and his compatriot Ramone Bailey, third in 8.09.

Bailey beat Smith to the gold medal at the CAC Games with his leap of 8.07 edging past Smith’s best of 8.03.

Taahirah Butterfied finished did not qualify for the women’s 100 metres final after placing fifth in her heat in a time of 12.22sec yesterday.

Meanwhile Dage Minors, who also represented Bermuda at the CAC Games, came tenth in the 800 final in 1:53.10 yesterday. Brandon McBride, of Canada, won the race in 1:46.14.
