Shianne Smith beat her own national record in the pentathlon at the French Championships in Rennes, northwest France, last weekend.

The 33-year-old, competing for her French club side, Saint Jean de Luz-Ciboure Athlétisme, placed third at the indoor meet after finishing with 3,613 points from the five different events.

Her previous record of 3,606 points came at the UW Invitational in Seattle, United States, in 2012.

Smith, who represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, has been based in France for 6½ years.

“I knew I was going to break [my record] because I felt good after my first event,” said Smith, who qualified for the championships in Bordeaux last month.

Smith said she has adopted a more relaxed approach to competition this season, which has helped reignite her love for the sport.

“I don’t have a schedule,” she said. “It was too stressful and regimented. If I wake up one day and my body isn’t feeling it or mentally I’m not feeling it, I’ll switch it out with yoga or surfing. This has allowed me to really enjoy going to the track and, in turn, I don’t feel pressured.”
