Jessica Lewis said she is “happy” with the progress made en route to a fourth place showing in her T53 100 metres final at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai yesterday.The wheelchair sprinter finished just shy of the podium after crossing the line at the Dubai Club for People of Determination in 16.84 seconds. “I am happy to come away from the race with a second-place advancement from my sixth-place finish in London two years ago,” said Lewis, whose time was a tenth of a second slower than her personal best she achieved the previous day en route to winning her qualifying heat to secure her spot in the final convincingly.“Fourth is always a tough spot to be in, but I know that I gave it everything I had and pleased to have beaten and gapped some of the big name competitors in my class. Tactically, the race could not have gone any better for me as I hit a higher max speed from the heat.”China’s Fang Gao claimed the gold medal with her winning time of 16.26 establishing a new championship record.Gao’s compatriot Hongzhuan Zhou crossed in second in 16.58 to secure the silver medal and England’s Samantha Kinghorn completed the podium in 16.64.“The competition is fierce,” Lewis added. “It is the top women in the world in my classification.“The atmosphere has been great here in Dubai. Perfect racing conditions on a fast track.”Lewis is also competing in the 400 and 800 in Dubai.She is scheduled to compete in the 400 qualifying heat tomorrow with the final also to be held the same day.The 800 qualifying heats will take place next Tuesday.The 26-year-old’s confidence is at an all-time high after her scintillating performances at the Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru, in August. She won medals in all three of her events, claiming gold in the 100 and 400, and silver in the 800.
