Jessica Lewis spoke of her pride after completing her World Para Athletics Championships campaign in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, yesterday.The 26-year-old wheelchair sprinter finished competing in the Middle East with ninth place in the T53 800 metres final at the Dubai Club for People of Determination Sports complex.Lewis, more accustomed to shorter sprint distances, finished last amongst the field, crossing the line in a time of 2min 5.38sec. Madison De Rozario, of Australia, claimed the gold medal in a winning time of 1:52.15, ahead of Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner in 1:53.19, with Zhou Hongzhuan, of China, clinching the bronze medal in 1:53.46 to complete the podium places. The race capped a positive championships for Lewis who agonisingly just missed out on a medal in the 100 final on Friday, finishing fourth, posting a personal-best time of 16.84 seconds, while she also finished eighth in the T53 400 metres final on Saturday in a time of 1:03.83.Despite returning home without a medal, Lewis was left delighted with her endeavours, in what has proved valuable experience ahead of her qualifying campaign for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo next year.“I am really proud of how I raced here at my fourth world championships,” said Lewis. “Going into it, I knew that the 100m would be the main focus with the 400 and 800 being my bonus events. “To come away with a new personal best time and a fourth- place finish in the 100 feels incredible, especially heading into a Paralympic Games year. “I am also proud to have qualified for the 400 final in my own right, without someone being disqualified, which is the first time that has happened for me in a major competition. “Competing in the 800m was tough for me, but I know that will never be my main event. “It’s still an amazing feeling to say I am officially ninth in the world in that event, though. “My coach and I set the goals we wanted to achieve while at the championships and we achieved them. “There is room for me to get faster, and that was all just proven here.“Dubai has been amazing, too. The organisers and volunteers have all been so helpful.“I’m looking forward to coming back to Bermuda for a much needed break from track to recharge and refocus for the next ramp-up to Tokyo next year.”
