Medal glory in New York

A host of Bermuda athletes have returned from the Armory Youth Championships in New York, with a combined total haul of 21 medals.Athletes from the Bermuda Pacers Track Club and Mid Atlantic Athletic Club clinched ten gold, six silver and seven bronze medals between them.Shayla Cann, of MAAC, and Pacers’ Sancho Smith proved the standout performers, winning two golds each, while the remaining victories came from Kazhi Sealey, Arima Turner, J`auza James, Jaeda Grant, Tommy Marshall and Kayla Raymond.Not only did Cann clinch gold with her performance in the girls’ 15 to 16 400 metres dash, her winning time of 58.18sec, was also well within the Carifta Games qualifying time of 58.50. Her second gold medal came in the 800 in a time of 2:27.09 sec.One of Smith’s successes came in the boys’ 15 to 16 400 dash, where he won in a time 51.59, with his second gold medal coming in the boys’ 15 to 16 800 in a winning time of 2:2.55.There was also double medal delight for Raymond, Marshall and Turner. Competing in the girls’ 17 to 18 800, Raymond took victory in 2:32.03, before winning silver in the 400 dash in 59.60.Marshall’s gold medal came in the boys’ 15 to 16 one-mile event in a winning time of 4:49.99, while he also took silver in the 3,000 race finishing in 9:38.50, narrowly behind winner and compatriot Sealey, who won in a time of 9:36.66.Turner took top honours in the girls’ 11 to 12 55 dash in 7.68, before also winning bronze in the 200 dash, completing the podium after running 28.19.James seized victory in the boys’ 15 to 16 high jump, while Grant won the girls’ 8 and under one-mile event in 5:40.97 Also among the silver medals was Daylen Scott, who finished second in the boys’ 11 to 12 55 dash in 7.67 and the 200 dash, finishing in 27.04. Ryan Outerbridge added a further silver in the boys’ 17 to 18 3,000 finishing in 9:52.26, while he also narrowly missed out on another third-place finish in the one-mile race, having to settle for fourth. Competing in the girls’ 15 to 16 category, Jezhari Talbot added two medals, winning silver in the 800 in 2:29.42 and bronze in the one-mile event, crossing the line in 5:52.87.Chase Tanner also added two bronze medals to the overall tally, finishing third in the boys’ 15 to 16 55 dash in a time of 6.86, while also completing the top three in the 200 dash, finishing in a time of 23.06.Also among the bronze medals was Nhaao Powell, who got on the final step of the podium of the girls’ 17 to 18 55 dash, finishing in 7.62.Meanwhile, Caitlyn Bobb enjoyed success competing at the 1A/2A championships this weekend. Bobb placed first in the 300, breaking the 2A record with a time of 38.93, beating the previous record of 39.83 from 2016. She also won the 500 in a time of 1:16.63, while also finishing second in the 55 in a time of 7.23. Finishing off a successful meet, Bobb ran the third leg on the 4x400m relay with her high school Hartford Tech clinching first place in 4:04.42 Elsewhere, Ashley Irby competed in the sixth Annual Darius Dixon Memorial, where she placed sixth in the 1,000, and in the process broke the national record set by Ashley Taylor Bean running a time of 2:58.96, beating the former record of 3:01.94.
