Hurricane expected to make distant pass

Hurricane Gert is forecast to make its closest approach today.

Tropical Storm Gert was upgraded yesterday morning to a Category 1 hurricane, but is only expected to make a distant pass by the island.

As of 6pm last night, the closest point of approach to Bermuda was expected to be on Wednesday at 8am. At that time, it is forecast to be 269 nautical miles to Bermuda’s north-northwest.

Gert is currently recording maximum winds of 70 knots with gusts of 85 knots. It is the second hurricane so far in the Atlantic season, preceded by Hurricane Franklin, which passed over Mexico earlier this month.

While Gert is still deemed a potential threat to the island, the Bermuda Weather Service said: “High pressure will continue to keep skies mostly sunny while protecting us from Hurricane Gert as it makes a slow turn to our distant west through northwest.

“The only local effects of Gert’s distant passage will be developing southwest swells later today and breezier conditions early Wednesday through Thursday midday, warranting a local small craft warning for winds 20 to 15 knots.”

The hurricane’s approach in the region prompted John Doherty, executive vice-president at the Argus Group, to remind residents to be vigilant and ensure that their policies are up to date.

“For those people who are looking for hurricane preparedness tips, please visit our website, at www.Argus.bm or call our Customer Service Centre on 298-0888,” he advised.
