Meteorologists are watching two tropical storms which could approach Bermuda next week.Tropical Storm Paulette and Tropical Storm Rene were not considered threats to the island last night — but the storms are expected to get closer to the island in the next few days.The Bermuda Weather Service’s 6pm forecast said: “We are closely monitoring TS Paulette and TS Rene as they strengthen to our distant southeast.”Tropical Storm Paulette — the closest of the two storms — was still 1,580 miles east-southeast of Bermuda at 6pm yesterday and moving west-northwest at 8mph.The system’s closest point of approach within the next three days is expected to be 1,010 miles, but it is expected to come closer after that time.Paulette is expected to weaken a little tomorrow and Friday before it gained strength over the weekend as it continued to approach the island.Tropical Storm Rene was 2,535 miles east-southeast of Bermuda yesterday afternoon and moving west at a speed of 16mph.The storm’s closest point of approach to Bermuda in the next days is expected to be 1,587 miles, but the storm could come closer after that.Rene is forecast to reach hurricane strength by tomorrow afternoon, but forecasts suggested the storm will turn northwards and away from the island over the next few days.Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said the possible impact of a tropical storm or hurricane on the island’s coronavirus test system had been discussed by the Emergency Measures Organisation.She added: “Clearly, we need to test as much as we possibly can, but if the circumstances are such that we are in the midst of a hurricane, then that may have to be stalled so people can vacate their properties.”Ms Wilson added that Renée Ming, the Minister of National Security, who leads the EMO, will deliver a briefing this week.
